Parable of the Lost Sheep

When He Walks Away

We love the story of the lost sheep—the Good Shepherd going out to find the wanderer, to bring him home. It’s one of the most tender, hope-filled images in all of Scripture, and it reminds us just how important each and every one of us is in the eyes of the Lord. He wants no one to go missing.

But there’s another side of this story we don’t usually consider.

What about the other ninety-nine?

The ones left behind.

Imagine yourself as one of the flock left standing there—vulnerable to predators outside of the sheepfold, watching Him walk away. You don’t know where He’s going or when He’ll return. You only know the Shepherd you trust has put the rescue of one wayward lamb over your own safety concerns!

Imagine it.

We live in a culture that prioritizes being heard and staying seen. Everything around us—from social media to self-branding—whispers the same message: you deserve to be the center of attention. We’re applauded for visibility, not humility; for standing out, not standing still.

So when Jesus’ love in this parable is focused on a stray—someone far from the “pack”—how do we quiet the jealousy that rises in us when attention is given to lift another, to celebrate his recovery, to carry him home?

We might feel lost in that moment.

Less important. Overlooked. Maybe even forgotten.

But the Shepherd’s leaving isn’t neglect—it’s love in motion. The ninety-nine aren’t forgotten; they’re trusted. They’ve already been found.

Sometimes we’re the lost sheep, carried by grace we didn’t earn. But more often, we’re the ninety-nine—asked to stay faithful, patient, and joyful as He rescues someone else.

That’s the test of spiritual maturity in a self-centered world:

Can I rejoice when someone else is found?

Can I stay steady when I’m not the story?

Can I trust that His love for them doesn’t lessen His love for me?

This parable isn’t just about being rescued.

It’s about learning to rejoice in another’s redemption.

Because in God’s kingdom, love isn’t divided—it’s multiplied!

The Shepherd’s heart is big enough for all of us.

And when He finally returns, carrying that one weary sheep home, the ninety-nine who waited well will share in the same joy:

“Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.” (Luke 15:6)
