It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s a Catechism!

by | Sep 4, 2025 | Pillars of Faith

“Catechism” — pronounced cat-uh-kiz-um.

Sounds dramatic, doesn’t it? Like cataclysm meets schism!
But on the contrary, it’s neither a disaster nor a division — it’s a godsend.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is one of the great treasures of our faith: a rich, living guide that helps us understand, explain, and live the truths handed down from Christ through the Apostles and Church Fathers.

It’s not just a book of rules or definitions — it’s a conversation between Heaven and earth, echoing 2,000 years of faith, prayer, and reflection.

A Brief History

The word catechism comes from the Greek katecheo, meaning “to echo.” From the earliest days of the Church, believers were catechized — taught the faith by having it “echoed back” to them through word, example, and community.

Over the centuries, many catechisms have been written to help believers understand Church teaching more clearly. A few milestones:

  • The Roman Catechism (1566): Commissioned after the Council of Trent to clarify Catholic teaching following the Reformation.
  • The Baltimore Catechism (1885): Familiar to many American Catholics — written in a Q&A format that formed generations of faith.
  • The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1992): Our current universal catechism, commissioned by St. John Paul II, presenting the faith in a unified, accessible, and deeply spiritual way.

How Many Are There?

Technically, there’s one universal Catechism — the 1992 edition (revised slightly in 1997).

But local churches often publish catechisms adapted for culture, language, and context — all echoing the same truth.

So while formats differ, the heart of the faith remains the same: one Lord, one faith, one baptism (Ephesians 4:5).

How to Read the Catechism

The Catechism isn’t meant to be read cover to cover like a novel (though you can!). It’s a reference, reflection, and prayer tool.

Here’s how to approach it:

  • Start small: Pick a paragraph related to a topic you’re curious about — prayer, the sacraments, or the Creed.
  • Look up Scripture references: Every section ties directly to the Bible.
  • Pray as you read: Ask the Holy Spirit to help the words take root in your heart.
  • Reflect, don’t rush: The goal isn’t memorization — it’s formation.

Reading the Catechism is like sitting down with the Church herself — listening as she lovingly explains the mystery of faith, one truth at a time.

Why It Matters

In a world of shifting opinions and endless “takes,” the Catechism gives us firm ground to stand on. It connects us to centuries of wisdom and reminds us that truth isn’t invented — it’s received.

So no, it’s not a cataclysm.
It’s the opposite: a steady, Spirit-filled echo of God’s love, handed down so that we can hand it on.
